how to stay inspired during a long, cold winter

December 2, 2016 / articles

For many of us who call colder climates home base, the period between December to March can sometimes be a trying time. Indeed, deep in the throes of another long, cold and icy winter, it can often be a difficult task to summon energy, feel vibrant and find inspiration in the everyday.

There are plenty of ways to protect against this seasonal drain, however. Here are three ideas to help you retain your spark and stay inspired throughout the winter season.

1.) Embrace nature

Unfortunately, we have quite a few more weeks until warmer days come our way. Instead of hiding out indoors, it may be a good idea, instead, to head out and explore. It’s easy to forget that, in addition to the frigid temperatures and sometimes difficult weather conditions, winter also brings a wondrous beauty from which we can derive inspiration. Perhaps a short walk or hike in the woods is all you need to feel reinvigorated.

2.) Try something new

In addition to heading outside, the winter months also provide great opportunities to try something new. Whether it’s a new winter sport or activity or a class at the local community centre, trying something new and expanding your skillset is a great way to have fun and feel inspired.

3.) Get your hygge on

With the Danish concept of ‘hygge’ experiencing a recent surge in popularity and interest, it’s likely that you have recently come across this term. Hygge, in its elemental nature, is a way of adapting to our climate and embracing everything that the colder season has to offer. It’s also a source of winter ‘inspiration’.

Practicing hygge not only means comfortable blankets and soft candlelight, it also means slowing down and adapting. This could include longer, more intentional meals and spending more quality time with friends and family, a great source of pleasure and inspiration.

4.) Travel

If you just aren’t feeling the hygge vibe, a change of scenery may just be what the doctor ordered. Although we may be a little biased, we always think that travel is a great source of inspiration and joy.
